Each summer, KLA works with MassCEC’s Clean Energy Internship program to connect with passionate, committed, and mission-driven students from across Massachusetts, our home base. The KLA Summer Internship helps connect a broad range of students to the local climate action process and brings fresh perspectives to our work fighting the climate crisis one local government at a time.
KLA Summer Interns don’t just gain exposure to the world of local climate action, they also get the opportunity to play critical roles in various aspects of our work. Over 12 weeks, interns assist different teams across KLA to serve the needs of our local government clients. They help with storytelling and data visualization on our Community Dashboards, assist with community engagement, and support our Climate Analysis Team in tracking emissions and conducting greenhouse gas inventories.
By bringing diverse perspectives and unique skillsets to the table, our interns enhance our projects and help us drive more sustainable and equitable climate solutions across the country. Throughout the summer, KLA staff provide mentorship and support that equips our interns with knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience that can guide their future careers in sustainability.
Introducing the 2023 Summer KLA Internship Program Cohort:
Annabel Coplan, Climate Analysis Intern
Boston University - B.A. Environmental Analysis & Policy, M.S. Energy and Environment
Annabel will be supporting our Climate Analysis Team to help local governments track emissions through greenhouse gas inventories and reporting.
“My ultimate passion is the natural world, with its beauty and complexity driving my concern of its destruction. It's what sparked my interest in Environmental Analysis and Policy, my major at Boston University, where I have one year left. As a rising senior, I wanted to take this summer to delve into potential career directions, and thus could not be more grateful for this opportunity from KLA. Already, I've learned that KLA offers me the perfect amalgamation of climate communications, intrapersonal community engagement and education, and data-driven, high-impact climate actions. The multi-faceted nature of this team has me excited to explore the variety of climate action across the country while understanding the mechanisms and analysis tools used to create and inspire tangible change.”
Theresa Acheampong, Climate Storytelling Intern
Worcester Polytechnic Institute - B.S. Computer Science
Theresa is joining our Dashboard Team this summer, helping to tell the story of climate data for communities across the country.
“While I have spent valuable years studying environmental science, my professional experience in the field has been limited, namely to a brief internship with the Massachusetts EEA. I chose an internship with KLA not only for the opportunity to alleviate this, but so I could approach this vast field from a new angle. KLA works with local governments, so being part of the team will give me the opportunity to witness how a different side of the field contributes to the common goal of sustainability. As I am in the earliest stages of my career, I believe there is much merit in an experience like this. I am eager to work with the rest of the Climate Analysis team to gain confidence in my abilities and to feel like I have contributed to something truly worthwhile.”
Our team was able to meet the 2024 Summer cohort of KLA interns in person earlier this month to kick off the onboarding process and enjoy a beautiful day in Boston. Interns spent orientation learning about KLA’s mission, values, and work and had time to practice their storytelling and climate analysis skills along the way!
Internship applications for the 2025 cycle will re-open in the Spring of next year. Learn more about the KLA Summer Internship program here.
